Three Goats and a Wolf (Ladakh) – Centre for Contemporary Folklore (CCF)

Once, a wolf happened upon a goat. On seeing her, the wolf asked, “What is on top of your head?” The goat answered, “A pair of horns.”

Then the wolf asked her, “What is this covering your body?” The goat answered, “My wool.”

Finally, the wolf asked her, “And what is on your feet?” The goat answered, “My hooves.” Hearing all her answers, the wolf immediately gobbled her up.

As he continued walking, he came upon another goat who gave him the same answers to the questions he asked whereupon he ate the second goat as well. He then continued on his way and came across a third goat, who was younger than the other two.

Readying himself for a third meal, the wolf asked her, “What is on top of your head?” The goat answered, “A pair of knives with which to kill you.”

A little surprised, the wolf then asked her, “What is this covering your body?” The goat answered, “A rope with which to tie you.”

The wolf finally asked her, “And what is on your feet?” The goat answered, “My hooves to kick you.” Saying this, the young goat pierced the wolf with her horns, bound him with her wool and kicked him with her hooves until he died.
