Kesar Saga
The Kesar Saga is one of the great oral epic traditions of the Himalayan and Tibetan cultural world. In Ladakh, the story of Kesar of Ling has been preserved through generations of storytellers, songs, and local traditions.
The epic follows Kesar from his miraculous birth and childhood through his rise as the King of Ling, his marriages and journeys to distant lands, encounters with supernatural beings, the abduction of Duguma, and the great war with Hor. At its heart, the saga is a story of heroism, kingship, loyalty, courage, love, and the struggle between good and evil.
The Ladakhi tradition exists in many regional versions, with differences in names, episodes, and narrative details. This makes the Kesar Saga not a single fixed story, but a living body of folklore that continues to form an important part of Ladakh’s cultural heritage.
